Hello again, my lovelies! On today’s installment of Dollar Tree Crafts, we have my Decorative Lanterns.
This project was simple, but had a lot of steps and took me almost 3 days to complete. It had to be done in stages, and I had to wait for paint to dry multiple times. I used Dollar Tree acrylic paint, so the coverage was not great. I did so many coats I lost count.
I started by painting the frames and plaque white, to give them a new lease on life. I won’t lie, it did take 36 hours for the painting process. Because 466 coats of paint. That was overly dramatic, and not quite true. But it was a lot of coats. Next time I will use spray paint, but for the sake of this being a Dollar Tree DIY I used what I had bought from there.
Once those were fully dry from all the coats of pain, I glued the mirror to the plaque. I was using it as the base of the lantern. I used E6000 and glue. The hot glue sets really fast, where the E6000 takes about 24 hours to fully dry. That’s why I use both.
I then glued the glass back into the frame, again using both E6000 and hot glue. It looks a little messy, as this was my first attempt. As I make more I’m sure they will get less messy.
I then glued the 4 frames, one by one to the base, using E6000 and hot glue again. I forgot to take a picture of that step, as these were Mother’s Day gifts and I was running out of time. It was after all 11 am on Mother’s Day when I was assembling the lanterns.
After I was sure that the hot glue was at least dry, I added the finishing touches. I chose a cute faux lavender plant, and a candle to keep it simple. I had very much intended to add butterflies and some cute stones. But, it looked cluttered with the stones and completely forgot about the butterflies till 11 pm that night. My bad. I’ll use both for another project I’m sure.
I had never tried this project before and was not sure how it was going to turn out. In the end, they came out cuter than I expected. They also made great gifts for the two moms in my life. Both mine and Jamie’s mom loved them.
